We are very fortunate that our wonderful SELA Parents Association is sponsoring a cultural exchange program for us! All of the elementary school will attend “The Visiting Mexican Artists Program: The Dancing Chickens of Ventura Fabian.” Their visit coincides with the last day of the Day of the Dead Festival, the Mexican multi-day holiday focusing on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey.
Our program focuses on the art and craft of Oaxacan woodcarving
and celebrates Mexican folk art and culture
with students. Ventura Fabian and his son, Norberto, carve and paint in front of students as a narrator passes carvings through the audience for a closer look, and shows an award-winning short film about their craft and their life in a small rural village in Oaxaca, Mexico. The program will be conducted in Spanish. Mr. Camilo Vargas, our art teacher, is also working with the Fabians and doing some hands-on painting with the children where Norberto Fabian teaches his unique designs and techniques and gives tips to students as they work on some skulls donated by the Parents Association
Parents are invited to the gym at dismissal to come and see the artist shop and display. All woodcarvings on display are available for purchase. All purchases go to the artists.
