The things families ask us most.
What makes SELA different?
SELA is an immersion school where children learn through English, Spanish, and Mandarin across a full academic day — language isn't a subject here, it's the medium for everything from math to art. Two campuses on Boston's South Shore serve children from 3 months through 6th grade.
What ages and grades do you serve?
3 months through Pre-K in Early Global Education, and Junior Kindergarten through 6th grade in the Elementary School — across our Hingham and Norwell campuses.
How does language immersion actually work?
Children spend their day with teachers who are teaching in their own language. Language is acquired the way a first language is — through play, routine, and real conversation — so understanding and fluency build naturally over time, without flashcards or drills.
Will my child fall behind in English?
No. Decades of immersion research are consistent: students reach grade-level English benchmarks and frequently exceed them, all while gaining a second and third language. English literacy is woven throughout the curriculum.
Does my child need to know Spanish or Mandarin first?
Not at all. Most children arrive with no prior exposure to the immersion languages. Our youngest learners especially absorb new languages with remarkable ease.
What are your teachers' qualifications?
Every SELA teacher holds a bachelor's degree, and most hold a master's degree. It's one of the clearest differences between SELA and other schools — the adults in our classrooms are career educators, in every subject and every language.
What are your class sizes and ratios?
SELA keeps small group sizes with low student-to-teacher ratios that vary by age, so every child is known well and supported closely. Our admissions team can share the current ratios for your child's program.
How can families get involved?
Families are part of the SELA community — through events, cultural celebrations, and open communication with teachers and directors. We'll share the many ways to take part once your child is enrolled.
Can we visit or schedule a tour?
We'd love to meet you. Schedule a tour to experience a normal school day, meet our team, and see immersion in action.
